Evergreen First’s History
The Evergreen First United Methodist Church was organized officially in 1872 as the Evergreen Methodist Church. The present building was constructed in 1906 at a cost $9,000.00. A number of Sunday School rooms were added to the side of the sanctuary in the 1920's. The next change was in the 1930's, when an educational building was added to the other rooms. This annex contained eight classrooms and the pastor's study.
The second educational building was added in the mid 1950's under the pastorate of the Reverend J. H. Bullington. In the late 1960's the first annex was connected to the sanctuary, and remodeled to house the present church offices, library, fellowship hall, and three classrooms. The Reverend Doug Newton was pastor at this time.
In 1957, under the direction of Mrs. H. N. Webster, Chairman, the porch behind the sanctuary was enclosed to make the present Ladies Bible Classroom.
The sanctuary has lovely stained glass windows, which are irreplaceable. The church also has a majestic, divinely-inspired pipe organ which was purchased! This photo from around 1915 shows the installed in 1948 while the Reverend Griffin E. Lloyd was pastor.
Our first organist was Mrs. Mary Sullivan and Mrs. Mary Robinson has been our organist from 1949 to the present, with a seven year absence for educational purposes.
The church has had four names from 1872 to the present time. The first name was Evergreen Methodist Church. Some years later it became Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1939-40, it was changed to the Methodist Church, when the three branches of Methodism (Methodist Episcopal Church, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and Methodist Protestant Church) united. In 1968, the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged and became the United Methodist Church. The value of the church in 1987 is in excess of $500,000.00 with a church membership of 410. The church membership as of September 2002 is 325.
What We Believe!
A church community serves as a vital foundation for individuals seeking to grow in their faith. It provides a supportive environment where members share their experiences, struggles, and successes, fostering a sense of belonging and collective purpose. Through worship, study, and service, congregants encourage one another to deepen their understanding of spiritual teachings and to apply these principles in their daily lives. Additionally, participation in communal activities and outreach programs strengthens relationships within the church, reinforcing the bonds that unite believers and inspire them to live out their faith in tangible ways. In this nurturing atmosphere, individuals can explore their spiritual journeys and cultivate a lifelong commitment to growth and service.
